New design for 2010!
This bin is made of a hard plastic for durability and is black for maximum heat absorption. It holds up to 16 cubic feet (or 120 gallons) of compost, stands 31 inches high and 32 inches in diameter and has an easy access lid. As with most traditional bins, this unit has no bottom to aid draining and encourage microorganisms from the earth to enter the pile.
Perhaps best of all, you do not have to turn or aerate the compost. This bin utilzes anaerobic ( without air) composting.
The benefits of anaerobic composting are:
Less work - you don't have to aerate compost inside
You don't lose as much bulk
Oxidation is prevented which destroys nitrogen content
Less carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere
No problems with bears, rats, raccoons, etc, as compost is fully enclosed
Negatives of anaerobic composting:
Process can create a bad smell but a layer of topsoil on top can prevent this
Composting process takes longer
